Tips for the Day! April 1, 2009

Take GO on an empty stomach!  GO contains an ingredient called L-Arginine.

What is L-Arginine?

L-Arginine is an amino acid that has numerous functions in the body. It helps the body get rid of ammonia (a waste product), is used to make compounds in the body such creatine, L-glutamate, and L-proline, and can be converted to glucose and glycogen if needed.

L-Arginine is used to make the nitric oxide, a compound in the body that relaxes blood vessels. Preliminary studies have found that L-Arginine may help with conditions that improve when blood vessels are relaxed (called vasodilation), such as atherosclerosis, erectile dysfunction, and intermittent claudication.

L-Arginine is also involved in protein formation. In larger amounts, L-Arginine stimulates the release of hormones, growth hormone, and prolactin.

Why take GO on an empty stomach?

Research shows that L-Arginine is more effective when absorbed on an empty stomach because ingesting food, amino acids, or high glycemic ingredients with or near this product is not in any way harmful, it simply will negate the benefits.  Very little of L-Arginine taken with protein will be able to cross the blood-brain barrier.  Again, we’re dealing with amino acids that compete for the same pathway.  The stomach should not contain amino acids that compete with L-Arginine.

NOTE:  Athletes that take their protein shakes with their arginine supplements are wasting their time and money!  The GO should be taken before the workout, and the protein after the workout.
